The Lake District
With the first bank holiday of the summer now upon us in the UK, travellers are setting their sights on a quintessential British escape – and what better destination than the Lake District? A north-westerly, mountainous area tucked away in the British countryside, The Lake District is a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site that showcases the best of the Great British outdoors and with its diverse range of activities and stunning landscapes, the Lake District caters to every type of traveller.
For those seeking adventure, the area offers an array of outdoor pursuits, such as paddleboarding, rowing, archery, climbing and abseiling, rafting, canyoning and scrambling. History buffs will find themselves at home, with Roman remains, ancient stone circles, historic houses as well as museums and galleries. For a more leisurely escape, or for those looking to enjoy a delicious meal or unwind with a drink, you can head to Bowness-on-Windemere, Ambleside or Grasmere. If it’s a more active holiday you’re looking for, you won’t be disappointed either with countless miles of cycling tracks (as well as plenty of bike rental options) and hiking routes with panoramic views from the mountain tops. The Lake District is family friendly too with wildlife parks, playgrounds, aquariums and The World of Beatrix Potter.
Spanning 912 square miles, the area houses the highest mountain in England, Scafell Pike, standing at 3,209ft as well as another 200 fell tops. Nestled among the mountains are 16 stunning lakes, Windermere being the largest and most famous. Though the region is sparsely populated with just under 40,000 inhabitants, it welcomed an astounding 18.11 million tourists in 2023 alone, a testament to its popularity.
If you’re headed to the UK during the summer months and want to get away from the hustle and bustle of London and get a true taste of the British countryside, head up north to The Lake District. However, be sure to plan ahead, as accommodation and dining options often fill up months in advance, especially during peak summer months.
