Introduction

This is the page you’re on now, where you can see an in-depth explanation of what you’re going to study in this course.

We set out the key objectives for this course so you can identify what you need to learn. We provide a downloadable checklist that you can print out to check off the points as you go through the course.

The Schwa

Learn what the schwa is, how to pronounce it and why it’s useful to sound native in English. You can complete our interactive worksheet at the same time as watching our pronunciation video, then check your answers using our answer guide. You can also download the slides used in our explanation video as a PDF.

This is a short booklet with numerous example sentences that you can read out loud. All of these sentences target the pronunciation of the past continuous tense. You can listen to audios of our native teachers reading these sentences correctly too, so you can read alongside the teacher or repeat once you’ve heard the audio.

Self-Study

Listen to an interesting audio of the history of the email and read the transcript, trying to spot all those schwas. We provide the audio, transcript and full answers to complete this activity.

Read a few examples of everyday activities you can do to listen out for and practise the schwa sound in English. We provide links to some great listening resources and other pronunciation courses we have to help you achieve this native sound in English.

Read a series of sentences and words to practise using the schwa pronunciation correctly. We also provide audios of these sentences and words too, so you can listen to the correct pronunciation.
