Introduction

This is the page you’re on now, where you can see an in-depth explanation of what you’re going to study in this course.

We set out the key objectives for this course so you can identify what you need to learn. We provide a downloadable checklist that you can print out to check off the points as you go through the course.

The Alphabet

Listen to a native English speaker say all 26 letters of the English alphabet correctly. You can copy the audios and talk at the same time or listen and repeat. You can also download our alphabet charts to help you with the correct pronunciation.

Review the top eight mistakes typically made by English learners when using the uppercase alphabet. We explain what the mistakes are and how to correct them. You can also download the slides used in our video presentation as a PDF.

The way we pronounce letters in their lowercase form is slightly different. This isn’t used very often and we mostly use the uppercase pronuncation, but understanding that a lowercase form exists will help you learn all the phonetic sounds in English. In this activity you can listen to audios of the lowercase letters being read out loud by a native English teacher and download our lowercase printout in PDF form.

Learn some fun facts about the English alphabet in this self-paced presentation.

Self-Study

Download and print out our alphabet flashcards to help you learn the alphabet in English. We also explain three simple games you can play by yourself using our flashcards to help improve your pronunciation and use of the English alphabet.

Practise the English alphabet and your listening skills in this listening activity. Listen to our audios of a native English speaker spelling words out loud and write down the words that are being spelled. You can use our online notes tool to write down the letters that you hear and we provide a full transcript too.

Practise spelling some common words in English to use all the letters of the alphabet. We also provide answers in audio form, so you can be sure you are learning the correct pronunciation.

One of the most popular ways to learn the alphabet, especially for younger learners, is through song form. Here, we point you towards a great YouTube video you can use to help you learn the English alphabet in song form instead.

One of the most realistic situations we need to use the letters of the alphabet is when reading acronyms out loud. There are numerous acronyms that native English speakers use on a daily basis. In this activity, you can test your spelling of acronyms by reading out a list of sentences and check your answers using our audio guide. We also provide a list of the most common acronyms in English with definitions so you can understand what native speakers are saying.

Shiritori is a famous Japanese game that focuses on the use of letters and spelling. In this activity, you will have access to our shiritori forum where you can participate in this game with our other English learners.

This final activity is a bit of fun! Look at the pictures that we’ve taken using our alphabet flashcards and try to guess which letters are missing.
